For more than a century, the United Methodist Church has been committed to providing quality higher education to students at 11 historically black colleges across the country. These institutions, in turn, have produced significant leaders within the church and community, including five sitting United Methodist bishops, two Florida Conference district superintendents, a Surgeon-General of the United States, a Director of the National Park Service and countless teachers, attorneys, judges, journalist and artists.
The 11 historically black colleges are:

- Claflin College, Orangeburg, S. C.
- Clark Atlanta University, Atlanta, GA
- Dillard University, New Orleans, LA
- Huston-Tillotson College, Austin, TX
- Meharry Medical College, Nashville, TN
- Paine College, Augusta, GA
- Philander Smith College, Little Rock, AR
- Rust College, Holly Springs, MS
- Wiley College, Marshall, TX
